'Breathable' vacuum pouches are used mainly for smoked fish & fresh poultry. For Fresh and Smoked fish, Government of Canada required Packaging materials that have adequate oxygen transfer to prevent bacteria development in an anaerobic environment (vacuum packaging). Containers or packages made of materials with an oxygen permeability equal to or greater than 2,000 cm3/m2/24 hours at 24°C and 1 atmosphere are required for fresh and smoked fish. Shrink bags perform similar function compared to vacuum pouches which is to extend shelf life of food in an hermetically sealed package. Shrink bags form a tight 'second skin' around a product when dipped into hot water for a short period of time. Shrink characteristics give shrink bags a premium look compared to vacuum pouches. Punctures resistance of shrink bags is generally better than vacuum pouches.
